Discussion web strategy

What are the benefits of the discussion web strategy and how can it be used in other content areas?

This could be used in any of the other content areas when it comes to reading. In a social studies class students could take a controversial subject like the Boston Tea Party and determine if the colonist were in the right or the wrong in what they did.

For a social studies content area, Lindsey and I think that stating "WWII could have been prevented" is a good topic for a discussion web. It could also be used to the cause and effect of any event in history.

We could use this in a Social Studies classroom. Pick a time period or event. Have students list the pros cons of the outcomes of the event (or law, etc.) Then discuss with a partner and then a small group. This will help them generate new ideas about the topic.

It allows students to organize thoughts before comparing them to others. It allows student to see other perspectives, thus giving clarity to the topic. This method would be best in history and math classes; because of the wealth of topics, students can share their opinions.
